The Moment I Started Questioning Everything

There came a point where I’d almost accepted that clear skin just wasn’t in the cards for me. But I couldn’t completely let it go. I started thinking—what if the problem isn’t actually my skin? What if it’s what I’m putting on it?

I looked at the moisturizer I’d been using every day. The one that claimed to be made for sensitive, acne-prone skin. I sat down and actually looked up each ingredient on the label. Nearly half of them were comedogenic. They were actively clogging my pores while the bottle promised to help.

That’s when things clicked. I needed products with fewer ingredients—not necessarily the ones with the biggest marketing budgets sitting on Target shelves. I just hadn’t realized how many questionable things were hiding in the products we’re taught to trust.

One Ingredient Changed My Perspective

I came across a product review that mentioned tocopherol. I’d seen that word everywhere on labels and always thought, “That’s just vitamin E. Vitamins are supposed to be good for you.”

Turns out, in the amounts used in most personal care products, it’s not so simple. Small doses are generally fine, but larger amounts can cause liver damage and have been linked to increased cancer risk. And this ingredient? It was in nearly everything I owned—soap, shampoo, toothpaste, lotion, dish soap, laundry detergent.

That moment changed how I looked at everything.

The deeper I went with my research—through articles, social media, conversations—the more I found. Tocopherol was just the beginning. There were so many ingredients showing up repeatedly in everyday products that most people don’t know about or think twice about.

From Overwhelmed to On a Mission

At first, learning all this felt overwhelming. Realizing how many problematic ingredients are in everyday products is heavy. And watching people I care about continue using these same products—not because they didn’t care, but because they genuinely didn’t know—that’s what really pushed me forward.

I started sharing what I’d learned. Helping friends and family slowly swap out products for better options. Through those conversations, I realized this was bigger than just me. There are so many people who want to make better choices but have no idea where to start. I wish someone had helped me navigate all this when I was beginning.

Living in a city where most people aren’t thinking about these things made it clear—this information needs to be more accessible. That’s why I created Rooted People. I wanted a place to share what I’ve learned about ingredients and products so you don’t have to spend months wading through confusing research and slick marketing.

Things Are Getting Better (Because of People Like You)

Here’s what gives me hope: the industry is changing. More companies are genuinely creating health-conscious products. And it’s happening because people like you are choosing differently, one product at a time.

I’m particularly passionate about supporting smaller businesses trying to compete with the big names. If we want better options to stay available, these companies need our support.

That said, I’m not claiming to have all the answers. I’m still learning, and I always encourage you to do your own research too. If you find something I’ve missed or learn something new, please share it. I want to build a community where we’re all looking out for our health together, one informed decision at a time.

Thank you for being here. Welcome to the community.
